HUMANITY AND TECHNOSCIENCE LAB
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
WHAT IS HAT LAB?
The Humanity and Technoscience (HAT) Lab aims to create a collaborative space for researchers from diverse cultural backgrounds and scholarly disciplines to examine how science and technology impact and interact with humanity. We study the material implications–the histories, the politics, and the uses–of science and technology to produce research that explains the ways past, present, and future societies shape and are influenced by our world’s technoscience.
WHY TECHNOSCIENCE?
Technoscience refers to the symbiotic relationship between science and technology. Modern science is impossible without technology, and contemporary technology only exists because of science. Technology and science are intimately connected and the HAT Lab research works to understand these fascinating, interesting, and convoluted relationships.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to provide the public with the information, resources, and tools necessary to make informed decisions about how we treat others, how we live in this world, and how to contribute to society. To this end, our research focuses on producing critical and responsive scholarship that documents and explains the connections between people, technology, and science.
OUR VISION
Our vision is to bring discussions of technoscience to the forefront of decision-making by producing the next generation of researchers and thought leaders who will facilitate regional, national, and transnational dialogues about the evolving role of technology in the future evolution of our world.
